The now-concluded show, Vikings had some most beloved and surprising romances. Here are the ones that shocked fans and some they always supported.

The now-concluded show, Vikings had some most beloved and surprising romances. Some couples had amazing chemistry, so the fans were rooting for them from the very start. Others, however, came as a bit of a shock to viewers.

The Norsemen were all passionate and fearless people. They lived fast and died young, so many of them didn’t care to make it last forever. There were some exceptions, though, and those couples remain some of the most memorable in the entire history of the show. Please note, there is some discussion of darker themes and unhealthy relationships below.

10 Rooting For: Lagertha & Ecbert

King Ecbert and Lagertha’s brief romance was based on mutual respect and maturity. Fans couldn’t help but root for Lagertha as she moved on from Ragnar – especially as she chose a king that was arguably even better than Ragnar himself.

Ecbert gave Lagertha what she valued the most: fertile land for her people. Unfortunately, her peace wasn’t to last.

9 Surprised: Ivar & Freydis

Ivar was one of the cruelest and consequently least likable characters on Vikings. In season 5, he freed Freydis from slavery and married her. It was surprising to see Ivar fall in love, especially since he generally lacked emotions. After all, we are talking about a guy who killed his own brother.

After he killed their baby, Freydis betrayed him. She paid for treason with her life when Ivar strangled her.

8 Rooting For: Ragnar & Athelstan

Even though their relationship wasn’t romantic, it cannot go unmentioned. Ragnar and Athelstan were platonic soulmates. They were each other’s window into the unknown world. Ragnar was fascinated by Christianity, while Athelstan learned about the Viking way of life.

It’s not just Ragnar’s heart that was broken after Floki murdered the beloved monk. The entire fanbase wept a little and the show never saw a relationship as profound as this one again.

7 Surprised: Ragnar & Yidu

Ragnar lowkey hoped that Yidu might serve as Athelstan’s replacement in his life, but he had no such luck. Also, around the time he met Yidu, he wasn’t really doing very well already.

What surprised fans even more than the relationship itself was Ragnar murdering his lover. Yidu’s death was one of the most brutal deaths in the show, especially since it was completely unnecessary.

6 Rooting For: Rollo & Gisla

There was something endearing about Rollo and Gisla’s relationship, even though Rollo betraying his people and joining the Francs was one of the worst things he had ever done. She was repulsed by him at first and felt he was “a savage” who didn’t even know how to use cutlery. For fans, seeing her grow fond of Rollo was both humorous and thrilling.

They grew to have one of the most successful relationships on Vikings. They respected each other and loved each other with a burning passion.

5 Surprised: Lagertha & Heahmund

Lagertha had chemistry with a fair share of men and women on the show, but most of them didn’t stick around. She had a little love affair with King Ecbert and she killed her husband, Kalf, on their wedding night.

One of her lovers was also Bishop Heahmund, the religious zealot, and the budding romance came as a bit of a surprise. It was also a bit of a shocker when Heahmund called out her name as he was dying, considering how much he hated people who were not of his faith.

4 Rooting For: Floki & Helga

Even those who didn’t like Floki have to agree that he and Helga made a great couple. They were both introverts who valued nature and the gods above all else.

Floki remained faithful to Helga throughout the series, which was not a common occurrence on the show. Even though everybody was rooting for them, their love story had a tragic end. Not only did they lose a child, but, eventually, Helga was killed.

3 Surprised: Torvi & Ubbe

The fact that Ubbe and Torvi got together was a bit surprising because Torvi had a history with Bjorn. Ubbe and Torvi had quite the journey together. From getting baptized as Christians to participating in Native American rituals, they saw it all together.

Having Ubbe pair up with Torvi felt a bit forced. It’s as if the writers wanted to keep Torvi a part of the show, but didn’t know how else to keep her around.

2 Rooting For: Lagertha & Ragnar

The best couple in the history of all Vikings is the one fans got to meet the first: Ragnar and Lagertha. They had it all: passion, respect, a beautiful family, and peace.

As Ragnar rose to power and got obsessed with the prophecy of many sons, he deserted Lagertha and Bjorn for Aslaug. The two nonetheless remained friendly and Lagertha loved Ragnar until she died.

1 Surprised: Bjorn & Astrid

This was more of a one-night stand rather than a full-blown relationship, but it still did come as a bit of a surprise. After all, Astrid was getting really serious with Lagertha, only to end up sleeping with her only son.

Astrid was somewhat obsessed with Ragnar and his legacy which may explain the happening, but this union was still a surprising one.
