Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was back to his best as he notched a brace in a 3-0 win over Newcastle at the Emirates on Monday evening.

After a fairly lifeless opening period that the home side dominated, they finally got their rewards when Aubameyang gave them the lead five minutes after the break.

Bukayo Saka doubled their advantage after good work by the impressive Emile Smith Rowe before Aubameyang swept home his second from close range to seal the win.

The victory moved the Gunners up to 10th in the table with the visitors, who were poor throughout, staying 15th after making it nine without a win.

Mikel Arteta made three alterations to his side following the goalless home draw with Crystal Palace last time out.

Cedric Soares came in at right-back while there were recalls for fit-again Kieran Tierney eand Thomas Partey.

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce reacted to the loss at bottom club Sheffield United by making eight changes in north London.

Goalkeeper Karl Darlow, defender Ciaran Clark and striker Callum Wilson were the only players to avoid the axe.

The likes of Andy Carroll, Jonjo Shelvey and captain Jamaal Lascelles all came into the side for the visitors.

The home started the brighter and were unlucky not to take the lead in the 15th minute through skipper Aubameyang.

Saka squeezed a cross in from the right which fizzed past the goal-line, with Aubameyang stretching at the far post to poke an effort against the crossbar from a tight angle.

Miguel Almiron drove a shot over the bar in a rare counter for the visitors before the lively Aubameyang did likewise for the Gunners.

Arsenal start to step on the gas
An unmarked David Luiz then powered a header wide from a corner after a deflected Aubameyang cross had palmed away by Darlow.

But a largely disappointing opening period ended goalless, despite Arteta’s men having opportunities to go in at the break with the advantage.

Darlow was forced into an excellent stop a minute into the second half when he pushed out Alexandre Lacazette’s powerful strike.

But Arsenal were ahead moments later when Partey’s long ball forward found Aubameyang, who skipped past Emil Krafth before rifling past Darlow.

It was game over on the hour mark when Emile Smith Rowe broke clear down the left and eased past Lascelles before cutting the ball back for Saka to sweep home from 12 yards.

Newcastle were carved open again with 14 minutes to go when Saka played in Cedric down the right and his pull back was tapped home by the outstanding Aubameyang.
