Ben McDermott has blasted the Hurricanes past the Thunder, twice smashing the ball out of Manuka Oval for a pair of sixes destined for the season highlight reel.
The Hurricanes came out slow after the Thunder set a total of 177-5, with Sam billings top-scoring for the Sydneysiders with 50.
It wouldn’t be until McDermott was summoned to the crease that the Tasmanians’ innings would come alive as he smashed a whopping 96 off 56 deliveries enroute to a six-wicket victory (with 12 balls remaining).
But it was two ridiculous sixes from McDermott that stole the show as he twice cleared the stands of Manuka Oval late in the match.
“Oh wow,” Brett Lee said on Fox Cricket. “That’s in the hotel – that’s out of here.”
“That’s in Lake Burley-Griffin,” Mark Waugh said.
“That’s as well as you’ll ever see a cricket ball hit,” Brad Haddin added. “Ben McDermott has got every bit of that. It’s gone out of the whole Manuka Oval.”
The ball was recorded 146km/h down the wicket and Lee quipped it was “300 off the bat”.
Boland’s three-wicket over
“That’s the biggest hit ever, maybe, in BBL history,” Mark Waugh suggested.
McDermott has now made scores of 89, 91 and now 96 this BBL summer.
Teammate Scott Boland impressed with the ball in hand, taking four wickets, with three coming in a single over.
The win sees the Hurricanes draw level with the Thunder as the Sydneysiders continue their soul-searching after a recent string of losses.
