SA can’t be ‘insular’ in its relationships with francophone countries, warns intellectual

South Africa’s voice regarding the way Africa should relate to former colonial powers, like France, is critical, says historian and philosopher Achille Mbembe.

Mbembe adds that South Africa shouldn’t be “insular” when it comes to diplomatic relations with francophone countries.

“In purely economic terms, South Africa is one of the key French economic partners on the continent,” said Mbembe, a professor at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research.
